SOLO THEATRE is a theatre founded in 2018 by Lithuanian actress, director, poet and playwright Birute Mar and her artistic collaborators. Its foundation lies in solo performances (but not only). By the order of the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Solo Theatre was recognised as a professional performing arts institution on 5 November, 2019.
It is a creative laboratory where the soloist is the Actor who is the most important instrument in the performance.
The repertoire of Solo Teatre includes works by Birute Mar, who creates independent artistic projects: new productions and monodramas, also renewed performances created in other theatres that have received international recognition and have won many awards at Lithuanian and foreign theatre festivals as well as educational programs, interdisciplinary genre projects.
“It’s not easy to be yourself in today’s theatre. A silent requirement for the artist is to keep up with fashion trends by provoking and often making audience laugh. In order to meet the real self in a creative work, you need silence, time and space – for yourself and the viewer – to hear ourselves together…
Let the SOLO Theatre be the time and space for our leisurely, bright meetings and sacred creations.”
Birute Mar, actress and director, founder of SOLO TEATRAS, 2018
“Solo Theatre, according to Birute Mar, is not just a theatre for one actor. According to the actress, this is the kind of theatre where the voice of each actor is heard. Here the strict performance concepts, directing decisions or experiments, and the institution’s infrastructure are offset by actor’s freedom and personal connection with the audience as well as the phenomenon of a self-governing community that creates an almost utopian impression.”
Ausra Gudaviciute, Theatre researcher, 2019
“Intelectual theatre of Birute Mar is a separate world deprived of temporariness, lingering in mind for much longer than a day; it is a world in which there are no cheap tricks or consideration for the mood of the audience. It is a world in which the actress wears no mask, the world in which the actor touches on the most important subjects of the world. Today Birute Mar is known as a remarkable Lithuanian artist who consistently contributes to the one-actor theatre.”
